Program Purpose

Most of the population of the mountain villages in the Ecuadorian Andes does not have access to regular eye care and treatment.  In fact, most of the members of these communities have never received an eye examination.  It is common to find students in the schools that are no longer able to see the chalkboard. Additionally, those with vision problems most likely do not have access to nor the resources required to receive treatment nor corrective lenses.

PACH recognizes the importance of vision for the quality of life and economic wellbeing of families and understands the clear correlation between vision and an individual’s earning power. Therefore, preventing vision problems, correcting and enhancing vision, and even restoring lost vision can greatly improve an individual’s ability to work and access different employment opportunities.  Further, in cases of blindness family members often must forgo other important activities like working or studying to become the caregivers for those individuals. Therefore, PACH has identified vision as being an area of priority in its mission of providing sustainable health solutions in this region.
