Go beyond the books. Get out of the office. Gain invaluable experience as you support the physical, environmental, and social well-being of Ecuadorian families through delivering primary and specialized medical and entrepreneurial assistance.
This program is created for medical and pre-med students, vision-care professionals, public health, health care management, and business students and anybody interested in the very important theme of vision care in rural communities. Participants will be able to immerse themselves in the Ecuadorian culture and gain firsthand experience in understanding the state of health and development in rural Andean communities in and around the Chimborazo province, the conditions that threaten these communities, and the opportunities that could lead to advancement.
The diverse cultural and economic context of Ecuador will challenge participants to think creatively as they explore innovative alternatives to addressing social, health, and environmental issues.
Participants will enhance language learning skills, cultural competency, as well as gain a unique perspective on the social, environmental, health, and entrepreneurial situations of a developing country.
Not only will you be certified as a Partner for Andean Community Health Fellow, recognizing the contribution you and your teams devoted to the communities of Ecuador, but we can work with universities and other institutions to assure that participants are credited for their undertakings.
Each intern will be participating in a variety of undertakings that are individually and cumulatively intended to provide benefit to the communities of Ecuador. Each participant will be designated a development project that is based on the tract theme of the Immersion Program. Interns have 3 tracks to choose from.
Each intern can choose one or a combination of the 3 tracks for a personalized experience while in-country.
This track allow interns to work alongside our medical professional staff in our clinic in Riobamba, Ecuador as well as in the field during our rural community campaigns.
This focus will give the intern the opportunity to create investigations and contribute to project development in a variety of themes in the field of public health.
Interns will work dyncamically to contribute to community-based efforts to provide solutions for water sanitation, nutrition, and food systems.
These experiences and skills are highly valued in today’s professional environment. In addition, participants will:
Gain insight into the opportunities, inherent risks, and limitations in healthcare in the developing world
Have ample opportunities to significantly increase Spanish and Kichwa language proficiency
Observe, learn, and live in a diverse cultural setting
Experience homestay living with local families as a rich cultural exchange
Have the opportunity to collaborate with development and relief organizations

Noah – 2019 Intern
Also know as “Caravanas”, these are opportunities to accompany the international FIBUSPAM medical outreach team when they visit communities. This experience will allow participants ample ability to contribute directly to the well-being of communities that are desperately in need of support.
We will visit several parts of the Andes and Pacific Coastal Region (4-week program only) to experience what local communities are doing to sustainably improve their environment.
INNOVATION IN ACTION
Participants will interact with NGO’s, governmental entities, and indigenous professionals, making a profound community impact while also gaining in-depth knowledge of economic development in Ecuador.

What Will The Experience Be Like?
These groups work as short-term “innovative teams” (Spanish: Innovar = Innovate and Equipo = Team). Each Innovaquipo will be participating in a variety of undertakings that are individually and cumulatively intended to provide benefit to the communities of Ecuador. Each Innovaquipo will be designated a development project that is based on the theme of the Applied Immersion Program. Details on each development project as well as overall program goals and experiences will be discussed in 3 online webinars prior to arrival in Ecuador.
